3. Bioethical Principles & Patient Confidentiality in Pharmacy
Pharmacy ethics governs the moral duties and professional obligations of pharmacists toward patients, colleagues, and society. Modern biomedical ethics is anchored by the four principles of Beauchamp and Childress: (1) Autonomy (respecting the patient's right to make informed decisions about their own body and care), (2) Beneficence (acting in the best interest of the patient), (3) Non-Maleficence ('Primum non nocere' - above all, do no harm), and (4) Justice (fair, equitable distribution of healthcare resources without discrimination).
Managing confidential patient health information under ethical and legal standards.
- Autonomy: Requires obtaining Informed Consent before pharmaceutical interventions or clinical trial enrollments.
- Beneficence vs. Paternalism: Pharmacists must guide and advise without overriding a competent patient's informed refusal.
- Non-Maleficence: Performing rigorous double-checks to prevent drug dispensing errors and lethal overdoses.
- Empathy vs. Sympathy: Empathy is intellectually and emotionally understanding another's internal state while maintaining professional objectivity; sympathy is feeling sorry for someone, which can cloud clinical judgment.
