2. Active Listening & Questioning Techniques (Open vs. Closed)
Active Listening is a structured communication technique that requires fully concentrating, understanding, responding, and remembering what the patient says. It involves reflective paraphrasing ('What I hear you saying is...'), summarizing, and validating emotional distress. Closed-ended questions elicit single-word answers ('Yes/No') and are useful for specific facts, but open-ended questions begin with 'What', 'How', or 'Describe' and encourage patients to elaborate on their symptoms, medication concerns, and lifestyle habits.
Examples of effective questioning in pharmaceutical care interviews.
- Open-ended questions promote dialogue, uncover hidden adherence barriers, and empower patients.
- Closed-ended questions are reserved for emergency triage (e.g. 'Are you currently having chest pain?').
- Reflective Listening: Repeating or rephrasing the patient's statement to confirm mutual understanding without judgment.
