1. Communication Channels: Verbal, Non-Verbal & The SOLER Framework
Communication in healthcare is the dynamic process of creating shared understanding between the healthcare provider and the patient. Studies in behavioral psychology indicate that while verbal communication conveys factual content, over 65% of emotional meaning is conveyed through non-verbal channels (kinesics, paralanguage, proxemics). Pharmacists must maintain open non-verbal posture to project empathy, warmth, and trustworthiness. The SOLER framework (developed by Gerard Egan) defines the five physical attending skills required during clinical counseling.
Physical body language protocols during patient encounters.
- Verbal Communication: Word selection, clarity, tone of voice, pacing, and avoiding medical jargon.
- Paralanguage: Tone, pitch, volume, speech rate, and vocal pauses that color spoken words.
- Proxemics: Personal space management (ideal clinical counseling distance is 2 to 4 feet in a semi-private counseling zone).
- Kinesics: Facial expressions, head nods, eye contact, and hand gestures.
