1. Lymphatic Anatomy & Primary vs. Secondary Lymphoid Organs
The lymphatic system is a specialized vascular network that returns excess interstitial fluid (lymph) back to venous circulation, absorbs dietary lipids from the gastrointestinal tract via lacteals, and provides surveillance against invading pathogens. Lymphoid organs are classified into: (1) Primary Lymphoid Organs (Bone Marrow and Thymus) where lymphocytes are generated and undergo antigen-independent maturation and self-tolerance education, and (2) Secondary Lymphoid Organs (Lymph Nodes, Spleen, Tonsils, Peyer's Patches, and MALT) where mature, immunocompetent lymphocytes encounter foreign antigens and initiate adaptive immune responses.
Filtration and immune activation mechanisms.
- Bone Marrow: Site of hematopoiesis and B-cell maturation.
- Thymus: Site of T-cell maturation and positive/negative selection (Eliminates self-reactive T-cells).
- Thoracic Duct: Drains lymph from entire lower body and left upper torso into the left subclavian vein.
